Tell DEQ Boardman must stay open

There are multiple areas which require acceptance for PGE to obtain approval for its 2020 Integrated Resource Plan. IBEW Local 125 is supporting the plan based on the information we have; however, at all opportunities we state our desire for the plant to operate until 2040.

Last week the Oregon Environmental Quality Commission denied PGE’s petition for the Title V air permit. This denial was not unexpected since the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality’s recommended it. Moving forward, we should stay focused on ensuring all regulatory agencies hear stakeholders’ concerns.

You can submit comments to DEQ by emailing Nancy Swofford at swofford.nancy@deq.state.or.us. The comment period has been extended, so please make your submission no later than July 23. As you might imagine, earlier is better. If you have friends and family that are willing, have them do the same. DEQ focuses on quantity not quality. A simple message such as the following can be copied and duplicated by everyone:

I support the plan to keep PGE’s Boardman Plant operating until 2020 and beyond. Due to the plant’s ability to provide reliable and affordable power, I know this facility is an important asset to meet PGE’s customer needs. Additionally, it is critical that we do not decimate Morrow, Umatilla, and surrounding counties through premature closure of this plant. Keep in mind that ratepayers throughout Oregon will be affected by an early closure. Oregon has a high unemployment rate; our schools are struggling for funding; and other public services have been and will continue to be impacted by this recession. Approve the 2020 plan and let’s get Oregon moving forward again.
